About This Video

Hi everyone, I’m JD from Willowbound Journals, and in this video I’m sharing my updated, current method for coffee dyeing paper for journal making. I like to do this in bulk (it’s not my favourite job, but it has to be done), and one good session gives me a huge stack of pages that’ll carry me through for ages. I’m mostly dyeing plain paper because that’s my favourite to use, but I also throw in lined, grid/graph papers, and even envelopes so I’ve got variety ready to go when I’m building journals. I show you my simple setup: a tray of hot tap water with a few tablespoons of cheap instant coffee swirled in, plus two wooden boards (one big, one small) where I lay the dunked pages flat and then layer them up. After stacking, I tip the board on its side to let the excess drip out, then I move everything into a super warm storage room where the sun hits and the pages can air dry over a few days. The first layer can stick and get a bit crusty or ripped, but I actually love that for backing journal cards I want to sew—smooth side for journaling, rough side hidden under the card.
