Is a long travel kit worth it over mid travel on a Tacoma?

For me, long travel is worth it if you actually want to push the truck—desert, dunes, whoops, and faster hits where the suspension needs to take abuse. You get more up travel and down travel and the truck stays more planted in stuff that makes other setups three-wheel. But if you’re not using that extra capability, mid travel can be the smarter buy.

How much does a Locked Off-Road long travel setup cost vs mid travel?

My full setup is closer to about $15,000 with everything installed, and my cousin’s mid travel setup was a little over $4,000 installed. That price difference is exactly why we wanted to see it side by side. You can feel and see the difference, but you’ve gotta be honest about what kind of off-roading you’re really doing.

Up front I’m on a Total Chaos 2+ long travel kit with Locked Off-Road 2.5 long travel coilovers with remote reservoirs and adjusters, plus Locked bypasses. In the rear I’m running Locked Off-Road 14-inch long travel triple bypass shocks with a relocation setup and Archive leaf springs. It’s basically built for speed and taking hits.

My cousin is running Locked Off-Road 2.5 coilovers with remote reservoirs and adjusters and a Rough Country upper control arm up front. In the rear he’s got an Old Man Emu leaf pack with Locked Off-Road Tundra rear shocks that also have remote reservoirs and adjusters. It’s a solid setup and it flexes better than a regular Tacoma shock.

Do Tundra rear shocks help on a Tacoma mid travel setup?

Yeah—if you’re going mid travel and you want a noticeable upgrade in the rear, I recommend the Tundra rear shock option. They’re more beefy and you get a little more travel than a regular Tacoma rear shock. We used Locked, but the idea applies no matter what company you go with.

What did you notice during the flex test at Clay Horn?

The mid travel did really good and didn’t three-wheel like a lot of trucks I’ve seen out there, but it still lifted a tire in the moguls. With my long travel, it flexed out with no problem and stayed more planted through the same section. You could also see the front droop more on my kit.

How fast could you go through the whoops with long travel vs mid travel?

On my long travel run I hit around 40 mph max through the whoops before it got sketchy, and even then those whoops were no joke. On another pass it was a little over 30 and it was intense. The mid travel couldn’t really push past 30 in that same section.

Why does long travel make the Tacoma look wider?

Long travel pushes the front track width out, so the wheels physically poke out more than a mid travel kit. That wider stance is part of what helps stability, especially when you’re trying to go faster. If you want that look and the extra travel, long travel is the move—if you’re willing to spend the money.
