We spent three days off-grid at our remote Alaska cabin, and just getting there was its own adventure. We loaded up the snowmachines, hauled the boys and the dogs, and crossed frozen rivers with wind ripping so hard at times I could barely see Joe in front of me. The snow was deep—about four feet—and Joe had actually gotten stuck right in front of the cabin on his last trip, so we were thankful he’d packed a trail with snowshoes. Once we made it, the first priority was heat (and warming up Kellen’s frozen toes), because that little cabin takes a bit to come back to life after sitting cold. This trip we also had to haul water because our artisan well is frozen, and Joe tried to troubleshoot it while we were there. We talked through what makes this place such a blessing—no road in, no signal, no distractions—just family time, games, sledding, and simple meals. I prepped most of our food at home (egg salad, chicken soup, cornbread muffins, and a gluten-free meatloaf), because winter travel means you don’t want to be hauling extra ingredients. We even ended up deep-cleaning and rearranging the cabin, dreaming up future upgrades like a wood stove and better counters. It was cold (we woke up to 0°), but the peace out there is worth every mile.
