About This Video

What is up YouTube? It’s Hollywood Floss, the worst producer of all time, back with another Sample Chop Session. In this one I’m running through the Pelham & Junior “Twilight Burn” pack, listening for the joints that actually feel like they can be flipped, then I pick my favorite and build a boom bap beat from scratch. And I’m doing it to prove my point again: boom bap can be any type of thing—pop, country, whatever—if you got the drums and the tempo, it’s gonna be cool. I’m in FL Studio with Serato Sample doing the heavy lifting on the chop side, and this time I pull up Addictive Drums 2 instead of Superior Drummer to switch the vibe. I talk tempo (I like 70–98-ish for boom bap) and I lock in around 86/87, then I use Serato’s “Set Random” to get quick chops and start treating those chops like chords—because that’s how you find the pockets fast. Key detection comes up (A minor/D minor), and I mention you can always double-check in Scaler or whatever you use. The takeaway: pick a sample with a lot of usable chord movement, keep it simple (I usually stay around four bars for the video), and make variations when you’re ready to level it up.
