About This Video

What is up YouTube? It’s Hollywood Floss, the worst producer of all time, and in this one I’m doing a Sample Chop Session with Soul Surplus “Jet Black” (Neo Soul). The whole point of these videos is simple: we take a pack, listen through it, pick one loop, and then chop it up boom bap style. I ran through all 15 samples, called out the ones that caught my ear, and then I landed on a loop I could actually use and build with. Once I picked the sample, I dropped it into Serato Sample, hit that little triangle for random chops (evenly distributed), and slowed it down to around 90 BPM for that smooth, Common-type vibe. Then I started with the drums first, grabbed a pattern from Beatmaker, and adjusted from there—because sometimes what they give you is close, you just gotta dial it in. I also brought in Kontakt Soul Fi, because pound-for-pound it’s one of the best banks around and it fits that neo soul pocket. My takeaway? The Jet Black pack is okay—average overall, highs and lows—but if you’re willing to dig, you can definitely find something to flip. The beat came out smooth, but it’ll need extra production on top if you’re trying to make it really stand out.
