About This Video

In this video I show you the easiest way to trigger loops and stems for a live event using Studio One’s Impact XT Drum Sampler. I start with a quick preview, then I break down the real requirements: a laptop, an audio interface (4 outputs if you want separate stems/clicks/cues, but 2 outputs is fine if you’re not doing clicks/cues), and a MIDI controller with drum pads (or a dedicated drum pad). I also explain why pad sensitivity is crucial—on my Oxygen Pro I set it to Fixed 127 so the pads always trigger at the actual volume no matter how hard or soft you hit them. From there I walk through Studio One setup step-by-step: creating a new Song, setting sample rate/resolution, choosing your interface, and keeping buffer size low (I mention 128 as a solid option) to reduce latency. I show how to create extra outputs for click and cue (mono outputs routed to 3/4), and the big one—how I configure my MIDI controller so pads trigger Impact XT while keys trigger VSTs (separate external devices by MIDI channels). Inside Impact XT, I cover importing single or multiple files (and the Shift-drag trick to spread samples across pads), renaming pads with short names + BPM, and the key performance settings: Loop vs One Shot, Toggle mode, Part Focus, All Notes Off, and Choke Groups so one loop stops the previous one. I also warn you for live use: don’t use “Follow Tempo” when you’re triggering different BPM loops—Impact’s power is letting you trigger cleanly without tempo-sync disasters.
