About This Video

In this part 2, I’m basically covering progressions—because progressions are the patterns songs and melodies follow. I break it down with the number system (Do = 1, Re = 2, Mi = 3, Fa = 4, So = 5, La = 6, Ti = 7), so when somebody says “1-6-2-5-1,” you know exactly where to go on the keyboard. I also show you how these progressions show up a lot in highlife and praise, and how to voice them in a simple, clean way so you’re not “playing yourself” with too much. I walk through common praise movements like 6-4-1-5 (and how some songs don’t even go to the 5 like you expect), 4-1-5-1, and the popular 1-4-5-4-1 that some people call the “Makosa progression.” The big takeaway is ear training: I explain how I identify progressions by playing a chord and listening to what I’m singing—if it sounds off, that’s not the chord, so I try another one. My advice is to write out progressions from real songs, practice them as patterns, and your flow and transitions in live praise will get way better.
