If you’ve got a retro car or van with a single-DIN slot and you don’t want to start hacking your dash to bits just to get modern features, this video is for you. Eonon sent me their X3U single-DIN Apple CarPlay/Android Auto unit, so I unboxed it, showed you exactly what comes in the box (including a reversing camera, mic, cage and release tools), and then fitted it into a classic VW T4—because you honestly can’t get much more “retro van” than that. I walk through pulling the old Pioneer out, plugging the loom in, and then the real-world stuff that actually catches people out—like VW ignition/constant power behaviour and how to avoid battery drain. I also show a simple cable-routing trick using a bit of thick wire as a puller (I always end up using old earth cable), and I mount the microphone where it makes sense: right in front of you, not hidden off to the side. Then I test the unit properly: radio region setup (Europe), sound presets, wallpapers/themes, USB playback, Bluetooth audio, Android Auto navigation, and a phone call test (engine running). I also connect Apple CarPlay to confirm it works as expected. The “won’t power off” issue turned out not to be the head unit at all—it was a previous antenna power mod on the van—so once that was removed, everything shut down and restarted perfectly with the ignition.
