*🎣 GEAR WE USED IN THIS VIDEO (Amazon link)* http://www.amazon.com/shop/floridafishingcouple Sometimes the best fishing days don’t go according to plan and that’s exactly what makes this Flashback Friday so fun. In this throwback episode, Capt Dan and Elizabeth head offshore in the Florida Keys for winter fishing… but strong winds quickly force every boat in the area to pile into Molasses Reef. What starts as a calm day turns into a full-on reef fishing frenzy with boats everywhere and fish biting nonstop. We catch and identify a wide variety of Florida Keys reef fish including snapper, grunts, porgies and more, while Capt Dan battles multiple barracuda — his least favorite fish — that just won’t leave him alone. This is classic Florida Keys winter fishing: unpredictable weather, crowded reefs, and action when you least expect it. If you’re planning a trip to the Keys, visiting as a snowbird, or just love offshore and reef fishing videos, this is a perfect look at what winter fishing really looks like here. 🎣 What you’ll see in this episode: Florida Keys winter reef fishing Fishing at Molasses Reef Identifying reef fish in the Keys Barracuda catches (and chaos) Windy day fishing tactics Real-world Florida Keys fishing conditions This Flashback Friday video was originally filmed before many of you were subscribers, and it’s one of those days that perfectly captures why we love fishing the Florida Keys, even when things don’t go according to plan. About This Video

We headed out on what looked like one of the prettiest winter days we’ve had in a long time—almost like spring—until we got into open water and realized it was a whole lot rougher than it looked. White caps on the patch, taking a beating, and we’re watching pretty much everyone else turn around and head in… while we keep pushing out. With the wind shutting down any real offshore plans, every boat and their brother piled into Molasses Reef, so we slid in with friends and did our best to make something happen. This turned into classic Florida Keys winter fishing: crowded reef, unpredictable conditions, and fish that definitely weren’t what we were targeting. We chum, we rig baits, we talk tactics, and we end up catching a mix of reef “extras” (grunts and other small stuff), plus Elizabeth lands a super cool oddball fish we think is a trumpetfish and plan to research later. Meanwhile, Dan gets absolutely harassed by barracuda—multiple times—including one monster that had us hoping it was a kingfish. Takeaway: winter in the Keys can flip fast, and sometimes the win is adapting, testing rigs (wire was mandatory), and still enjoying a day on the water even when the yellowtail never show.
