About This Video

I only had about two hours to fish, so this whole trip was about making fast decisions and not wasting time. I started anchored just off the reef in roughly 30 feet with a chum bag out, trying shrimp, a jig, and some cut bait. First casts were “rock fish” and a bunch of little strawberry grouper—pretty fish, but not what I was hoping for. When the bites stayed small (and I even slid into grunt land), I had to ask the real question: do you sit there and hope the chum brings in a better class of fish, or do you pull the anchor and go find them? I made the call to move inshore to a patch reef and the difference was immediate. First cast, I stuck a little mackerel, then I anchored on the sand edge in about 8–10 feet and let the chum drift over the rocks while I fished the sides. That’s when I got my first mutton of the day (short), followed by yellowtail, porgies, and plenty of action. I also show the exact rig changes I made—ditching the too-light jig, switching to a split slider with a snelled circle hook, retying frayed fluoro (because losing the “big one” to a fray is the worst), and why I like breaking the chum block in half as a built-in timer to decide when it’s time to move again.
