🎣 GEAR WE USED IN THIS VIDEO (Amazon link) http://www.amazon.com/shop/floridafishingcouple January in the Florida Keys kicked off exactly the way we hoped… with non-stop action. In this episode, Capt Dan and Elizabeth head to the patch reefs for what turns into one of the most ridiculous days of fishing we’ve ever had. Elizabeth has officially declared 2026 the “Year of CATCHING”, and in this video she finally explains why she hates fishing… but absolutely loves catching. And the reef did not disappoint. Every single cast produced fish, with schools of big reef fish swarming our baits nonstop. But then things got interesting. We kept catching what we thought were margate… and tossing them back. Later we realized we had been throwing back porgies (also known as scup or sea bream) — a prized eating fish known for its sweet, flaky white meat that’s often compared to snapper or branzino. And we were catching some BIG ones. Oops. This episode is packed with fast-paced Florida Keys reef fishing, hilarious reactions, constant hookups, and one very painful case of fish misidentification that we already know the comment section is going to have a field day with. If you love: • Florida Keys fishing • Patch reef fishing • Snapper, porgy and reef fish • Non-stop rod-bending action • And honest, real-world fishing mistakes You’re going to love this one. 🎣 Welcome to the Year of Catching. *Our AMAZON STORE* http://www.amazon.com/shop/floridafishingcouple (contains affiliate links) *EVERYTHING You Need* https://linktr.ee/floridafishingcouple ***Check out our gear*** https://floridafishingcouple.com/our-gear Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUpU2Z6CahYWKUU7WcJztA/join NEW Florida Fishing Couple Merch is UP! About This Video

January in the Florida Keys came in swinging, even with the water temp dropping fast—down to about 65 degrees. Elizabeth officially declared 2026 the “Year of CATCHING,” because I’ll be honest: I don’t love “fishing” if we’re not catching. So we ran out to the patch reefs (north side) looking for that steady wintertime action, and once that tide started turning from dead low to incoming, it was like somebody flipped a switch. From there it was chaos in the best way—mutton snapper after mutton snapper (all shorts, so easy releases), yellowtail showing up out of nowhere even without chum, mangrove snapper, hogfish (yes, on rod and reel), margates, and a whole pile of little yellow jacks that fight like torpedoes and try to hook you on the way in. We also talked through a balloon/clip setup we use with live cigar minnows (I always want to call them “speedos”) for sails or anything cruising, and why that quick-release clip is so handy. And then came our “oops” moment: we kept calling fish margate and tossing them back… then realized we were likely throwing back porgies (scup/sea bream). Painful lesson, but that’s real-world Keys fishing—sometimes you learn it the hard way, and the comment section will absolutely remind you.
