About This Video

What a difference a day makes in the Florida Keys. We were literally on this same patch reef yesterday when it was flat and gorgeous, and then today we roll up to white caps, wind, and that “front rolling in” feeling where my stomach is doing flip-flops. In winter, we pick our offshore days carefully, and patch reef fishing is where it’s at—especially if you’ve got family on board or you’re running an 18–20 footer and don’t want to take a beat offshore in 3–5. Even with the weather being weird, the reef was alive. We adjusted with heavier weight when the current and rocks were stealing jigs, and then the big lesson of the day showed up: freeline shrimp was the deal. We went boom-boom-boom on fish—mutton snapper, hogfish (yes, on a freeline), and even a mangrove snapper in the chum slick after we put out half a chum block. We also had the “variety is the ticket” moment with a big Goliath grouper (twice!) and then the grand finale… that truly disgusting green eel that killed our bite and had us ready to cut the line and go home. Classic January Keys day: three days of weather in one trip, nonstop action, and a little chaos for good measure.
