In this episode, I’m putting new KastKing gear to a real Florida Keys test—no studio talk, just on-the-water abuse like we always do. We start with an unboxing and first impressions on the Elite 5000 reels (and the rods they sent). The 10-foot Kong rod is honestly more of a beach/surf-casting rod to me—great for a sand spike—but not something I’d run on the boat. The reel, though? Right out of the box it felt “bulletproof,” smooth as silk, and I wanted to see if it could actually hold up to the way we fish. We ran these reels across multiple styles: patch reef trolling, bait fishing the patch reefs with shrimp, and then offshore trolling where the drag finally got to sing. Elizabeth put the reel to work on yellowtail snapper, and I pushed the same setup offshore and landed a blackfin tuna and a mahi. The big takeaway: the drag stayed extremely smooth, the reel handled real pressure without feeling sketchy, and for the price point it impressed me more than some reels we’ve paid way more for. I don’t baby my gear—rinse it and put it away—so the long-term test is rust and durability, but right now it’s earned a spot as one of our main reels.
