About This Video

We headed out of Key Largo for what we thought was going to be a solid lobster day—three different spots, lots of hard bottom, ledges, and rocks that just screamed “perfect spot for lobster.” We even had a small hurricane offshore, so we knew we might get rainbands and wind, but it felt like our last good chance to get out there before the weather got ugly. Elizabeth was with me (my good luck charm), we dropped in, and… nothing. No keepers, not even a glimpse—minus one tiny Spanish lobster the size of a crawfish and an enormous green eel that came lunging with those mean teeth. The wild part is the reef itself was absolutely gorgeous. We saw schools of tropical fish, tons of tiny baby fish, hogfish, big parrotfish, grouper tucked into holes, and even footage from other dives with yellow jacks circling and a few sharks cruising by. A lot of people say the reefs are dead, but what we saw was vibrant fans, living coral gardens, and fish stacked up everywhere—healthy and thriving. So yeah, it wasn’t always catching (we snorkeled our brains out and swam 87 miles), but it was still a great day in the Keys. We put this one together to show the real deal: sometimes you strike out on lobster, but you still get reminded why this underwater world is worth protecting.
