It’s Flashback Friday and we’re heading offshore in the Florida Keys with our buddy Dan (yep… another Dan), who comes down every winter, brings his boat, and somehow always seems to be around fish. The water was absolutely beautiful and flat, and sailfish was the target species. We got set up with ballyhoo, started working the area, and before long we watched that sail come in close and fast—then BOOM, it was game on. This turned into a long, grueling light-tackle fight that tested everything: knots, drag settings, patience, and straight-up stamina (hello, Popeye arm). We were on 30 lb braid with a 50 lb fluorocarbon leader, so there was no horsing this fish in—just steady pressure, smart boat work, and staying calm when he made runs and wrapped around the boat. Dan’s chum trick played a big role too, pulling bait in and bringing the sail right to our ballyhoo. We finally got him boatside, saw he’d been tagged before, grabbed the bill and tail, snapped a quick pic, and revived him until he kicked off strong. Biggest sailfish of my life—absolute majestic beast.
