In this video I go over 5 basic boxing defense drills you can practice with a partner. The great thing about these drills is that you don't need a gym, in fact, you probably don't even need boxing gloves but it's safer if you do! All you need is a partner and enough space to move freely. The emphasis is not offensive technique but rather defense so don't stress so much on throwing correcting punches although it is always great to practice good form no matter what you're doing. Boxing is the art of hit and not get hit in its simplest form. IT'S MUCH HARDER THAT IT SOUNDS. There are so many elements to boxing and tips and tricks but the objective is the same: Hit & DON'T get hit. The 5 Boxing Defense Drills are the following: 1) Slips-- Face your partner in your boxing stance. Have them throw Jab(1) and slip to one side. If you both are in your orthodox stance you will slip to the outside or right. Then have them throw Cross(2) and slip the other way. Make sure to have your hands up as you slip to maximize defense. 2) Bob&Weave/Under-- Face your partner in your boxing stance. Have them throw hooks from both sides. Go under the hook making a letter "U" motion with your full body. Make sure your hands are up as you go under, If you feel more comfortable, take a half step to the side as you go under in either direction. 3) Parry-- Face your partner in your boxing stance. Have your partner throw Jab(1) at you. The parry is simply redirecting the punch by push it down or to the side. I like to take a half step back or to the side as I parry to give me that extra layer of defense just in case my opponent is faking the jab at least I am far enough to react to the feint. 4) Check/Block--Face your partner in your boxing stance. Have your partner throw hooks to the body now. The check is similar to the slip it is the same motion however instead of having your partner miss you are absorbing the punches. You are cutting the distance the hooks are traveling so you are going towards the punch not away from it. You will block with your elbow/bicep. 5) Footwork-- Face your partner in your boxing stance. Now mix up the punches. If you are not in position to get hit you are not going to get hit. Footwork is offense and defense. I've said it before footwork is the most important part of boxing besides mindset. Have your partner throw multiple punches and practice on moving around this doesn't mean you are running from your partner just move around enough to get out of harms way.
