About This Video

I’ve always thought “Hey Ya” by Outkast was this happy, upbeat song… until you actually listen to the lyrics. So I wanted to do a really cursed (but kind of amazing) experiment: what if Nirvana—one of the saddest bands of all time—actually wrote it? In this video I take the original major-chord vibe and flip it into something darker by moving into drop D, rewriting the chord feel to sound more minor and moody, and building a grungy guitar riff that still fits the hook. Once the riff and structure started clicking, I laid down drums to lock in that driving, gritty energy, then added a bassline (yes, I admit I’m not a fingerstyle hero). The scariest part was vocals, because the melody ends up totally different from the original, so I had to actually sing it instead of just repitching the Outkast vocal. To get in the right headspace, I used lalal.ai to quickly isolate Kurt Cobain vocals from a Nirvana track so I could study the tone and vibe. And of course, we had to include “shake it like a Polaroid picture,” because how could we not?
