About This Video

This video is basically me raiding my dad’s vinyl collection (with permission) and turning it into a brand new song. Every record had some history behind it, so I had him walk me through a bunch of picks—starting with the first record he ever bought—and I sampled straight off the turntable to build the track from scratch. I’m grabbing tiny moments: a groove to start the idea, a kick I liked (shorter, pitched down, EQ’d to dodge the chord bleed), a snare, and then I keep stacking until it actually feels like a “song” instead of random chops. The middle of the process is me doing the real producer struggle: some records are easy to sample, and some are like, “what the hell am I going to do with this?” I end up warping stuff into time, pitching it a ton, reversing it, and mangling it with chorus, RC-20, EQ, autopan, ShaperBox—everything—just to make it sit. Once I had too many sounds, I stopped and organized the whole session so I wouldn’t lose the plot. The big twist is the final section: I decide I’m doing a trap-type thing and I get my dad to actually play on it—on a trap beat—something he’s definitely never done. That’s the payoff.
