About This Video

I realized something kind of embarrassing: basically every beat I’ve made for the past few years has been in 4/4. Yeah, 99% of popular music lives there, but 4/4 is wildly overrated, so I asked you guys to hit me with your favorite non‑4/4 time signatures. Then I took the top picks and turned it into a challenge: make three beats from easiest to hardest, and actually make them sound like real music—not just “weird for the sake of weird.” We start in 7/8, and I’m not gonna lie, I thought it would force me into some rock thing. Nope. I ended up making a trap beat that I wanted to feel Billboard-ready, with hi-hat rolls and even a polyrhythm on top. Then I jumped to 10/4, which instantly put Tool in my head, so I built a guitar-driven riff and I even dropped my go-to tip: double-track guitars (one left, one right) to make them sound huge. Finally, 11/8 was the boss level—kick/snare first to find the groove, then Arcade chops, and I even did the Ableton audio-to-MIDI convert trick to add harmony and color. By the end, I’m saying it for real: 11/8 is the new 4/4.
