About This Video

In this Drinks and Chill Mini Review, I (Gio) hang out with Matt and we crack open a miniature bottle of Stauning Bastard—Danish rye whisky finished in mezcal casks at 46.3% ABV. We run it through our usual quick hits: nose, taste, a little background on the whisky, and then the finish and scores. Right off the bat, the nose surprised us in the best way—sweet oak, a floral “high-end perfume” vibe (not that harsh alcohol punch), plus that rye-leaning licorice note and a bit of fruitiness. On the palate, this one went down almost too easy. I got a creamy, heavy sip with Twizzlers-style licorice and a touch of spiciness, and then the chocolate notes showed up—Matt was calling melted milk chocolate, and I was in that “chocolate milk / creamy chocolate” zone. The aftertaste kept hanging around with Twizzlers, chocolate, and maybe a little vanilla sweetness. For a mini, this was way above the “just okay” tier—Matt landed at a 9, and I gave it an 8.6, and honestly it had us joking about road-tripping from Texas to Denmark just to grab a full bottle.
