About This Video

Happy New Year, ladies and gentlemen—welcome to Divers Ready. In this third installment of my “deep dive into dive computers” series sponsored by Shearwater Research, I’m breaking down one of the biggest points of confusion for new divers: what your dive computer display is actually telling you. I use the Shearwater Peregrine TX as the example, but the goal here is to help you understand the information on most computers—Shearwaters just tend to show you more detail. I start with the single most important first step when setting up a new computer: selecting the correct mode (Air, Nitrox, 3-gas Nitrox, Gauge, and—on other models—tech/CCR or freedive). From there I walk through the home screen, what changes once you’re in the water, and the extra data pages you can scroll through—like compass, transmitter status, MOD, PPO2, temperature, conservatism, and oxygen loading. Then I simplify the “big brain” stuff recreational divers see and panic about: Time To Surface, SurfGF (Surface Gradient Factor), GF99, and the tissue saturation bar graph—tools that help you make smarter decisions about ending the dive, ascending, and how conservative you want to be. Finally, I run through the main menu: defining gas, dive setup, dive planner, logs, Bluetooth/app syncing, and the system setup options—plus a very strong warning about not touching custom gradient factors unless you truly understand what you’re doing.
