At the same time, big-box retail across other industries has been getting chewed up by e-commerce, so pretending scuba is immune to the Bezos meat grinder is fantasy. I also dig into the manufacturer side of the mess: shrinking sales, private equity chaos, and the ridiculous retail model that forces local shops into minimum order requirements, tiny margins, and “wait six weeks” customer service. That’s how you drive divers like me to order online and have a reg on the doorstep in two days. My take is simple: local dive shops either pivot hard toward travel and training (where you control margins), or they go all-in on retail and crush e-commerce.
