About This Video

In this video I kick off a three-part series with Shearwater Research, breaking down the first big decision you should make when shopping for your first (or next) dive computer: what style do you actually want on your wrist? I compare the two modern options—watch-style computers and wrist-mounted computers—and I lay out the real-world pros and cons of each from the perspective of someone who dives and teaches for a living. The headline is this: these days there’s very little functionality difference. With modern displays and features, a watch computer can give you 95–99% of what the bigger units do—digital compass, vibration alerts, multiple modes, multiple gases, transmitters, and more. The tradeoffs are mostly screen size and battery: watch computers are brilliant as a daily-wear travel companion (one less thing to pack), but a smaller case usually means a smaller battery and more frequent charging—and if your eyesight isn’t 20/20, that bigger wrist-mounted screen can be a game-changer. And yes, I also talk about the “third style” you’ll still see in the wild: the console computer. In 2024, I consider those house bricks on the end of a hose to be a relic—awkward in trim, out of your line of sight, and relying on annoying audible alarms. Tech moves on, and your dive computer choices should too.
