Bikini Atoll has been sitting at number one on my scuba diving bucket list for well over a decade, and in Part 2 I’m finally bringing you along for what is genuinely world-class wreck diving. We’re about halfway through our August 2024 trip and I take a breather topside on Bikini Island itself—an abandoned, creepy ghost town with some very real rules: don’t dig too deep, don’t eat the coconuts, and definitely don’t touch the hot metal. It’s proper zombie apocalypse vibes, and it really drives home that this place is still living with the consequences of the nuclear tests. Underwater, this is not casual diving. Every wreck here sits deep—because the blasts gouged a crater down to about 200 feet—and there’s no shallow option, no easy dive. It’s technical diving with long deco hangs, and the wrecks are enormous: aircraft carriers and battleships that take multiple dives just to begin to understand. I also talk about the IJN Nagato, one of the most storied battleships in history, and the sobering reality that these are the only wrecks on Earth sunk by nuclear weapon.
