About This Video

In this first video of a three-part series, I’m taking you through Halcyon’s relatively new integrated dive computer system, the Symbios—specifically the handset and the tank pod. And yes, right off the bat: this one is sponsored. I don’t say yes to many sponsorships (I turn down the vast, vast majority), but Halcyon have a long track record of consistently high-quality kit in our sport, so I was genuinely excited to bring this system to the Divers Ready audience. We start with the Symbios tank pod. I’m a big fan of air integration, and if you’re launching a modern dive computer, it better be air integrated. What’s interesting here is the extra functionality: the pod includes a gyroscopic trim sensor, which gives divers an actual tool to measure trim—something I normally have to coach using video feedback because it’s so hard to self-assess in-water. The pod also uses magnetic induction communication rather than radio, which should be more stable underwater. Then we get into the Symbios handset: a standalone computer that also acts as a controller within Halcyon’s broader ecosystem (tank pod, HUD, app—and more modules to come). It supports recreational, open-circuit tech, and CCR diving, runs Bühlmann ZHL-16C with gradient factors, and has a gorgeous color TFT screen with customizable data fields—meaning, quite simply, you can’t outgrow it.
