About This Video

In this episode of Across the Ocean, I’m in Miami and I’m joined by Matias over in Zurich, and we get properly practical about the unsexy half of “upgrading” your underwater camera rig: selling the gear you already own. Because let’s be honest—if you just buy a new camera, that’s not an upgrade… that’s just buying a new camera. Unless you’re collecting really expensive paperweights, you’re going to want to liquidate your current system to help fund the next shiny, sexy rig. We dig into the big question: should you sell your setup as a complete package, or break it up and sell piece-by-piece? Packages are cleaner and easier—one buyer, one deal—but you need that one person who wants your exact setup, and that can be surprisingly hard. Matias talks through why he started splitting his GH5/GH5S kit into individual listings to widen the buyer pool beyond just underwater shooters. I add my own angle: don’t forget your camera gear works above water too—some items (like a telephoto lens) make zero sense underwater, but can sell quickly to non-divers. We also cover where to list, why local sales are usually safer and simpler, and the timing problem: the longer you hold gear, the more it devalues. Keep it too long and you’ll get paperweight prices—especially with older systems like the GH5, even though it’s still a very capable 4K60 workhorse.
