About This Video

One question instructors get asked all the time is: “What’s your favorite course to teach?” For me (and a lot of my tech instructor buddies), it’s Advanced Wreck. In this video I’m correcting an oversight from my old technical diver progression series, because somehow I skipped the course I’m teaching a ton of this year. I break down what Advanced Wreck actually is, who it’s really for, and why it’s absolutely not a “tick-the-box” specialty. I start with prerequisites—both the agency minimums (which, frankly, are pretty slack) and my personal requirements here in South Florida. I want divers with real experience: more dives, more wreck dives, and—crucially—technical training, because trying to do proper Advanced Wreck on an NDL profile just doesn’t give enough time to build the skill set. Then I walk through what you should be learning: scenario-based problem solving for when things go bad—lost buddy, entanglement, lost lights, zero viz silt-outs—plus refining the fundamentals (breathing, buoyancy, trim, propulsion, communication) inside an overhead environment. Finally, I talk about what this training unlocks: the ability to conduct serious penetrations (engine rooms, pump rooms, mechanical spaces) within your depth limits, and doing it in a way that makes you the diver everyone actually wants to follow.
