No one wants to cancel a dive, but sometimes it's just safer to call it and live to dive another day. So let’s talk about cancelling dives. Why should you cancel a dive? How do you know when it is the right time to cancel a dive? How do you cancel a dive? How do you cancel a dive that’s already started? Let’s start with the basics. Anyone can cancel any dive at any time for any reason. Abort. Get out of there. That is the first rule of technical diving, but for recreational divers it should be right up there with ‘Never hold your breath.’ Usually the best time to call a dive off is the first time you ask yourself if it might be time to call the dive off. Pursuing past this point leads to an increase in anxiety and not normally favorable results. But there’s a lot of threats to ego that influence the decision to call a dive. Will my buddy be disappointed? What will the other divers think of me? Take all of those thoughts right them down on a piece of paper, dip it in gasoline and set them alight. No! Absolutely not! If you think you might have to cancel a dive, none of those questions should even be a factor. Give a damn what other people think. Reasons why you might cancel a dive: Environment conditions, bad weather Gear issues Physical condition Bad juju! Here's my affiliate link to Gareth Lock's EXCELLENT book: Under Pressure.
