About This Video

A young diver from Switzerland emailed me a bunch of questions that all boiled down to one thing: how do you actually get the most out of a Divemaster internship? In this video I break it down into three big steps, because a DM internship is a serious commitment—you’re trading weeks or months of hard work for real-world training, and that exchange needs to be fair. First, I want you to start with the end in mind: what type of Divemaster do you want to be? There isn’t “one” DM job—there are wildly different operations and environments, and training in one doesn’t magically qualify you to work in another. Second, beware the bare minimum. Agency standards cover a tiny slice of what working DMs actually do day-to-day, so if your internship is going to make you employable, you need to learn the other 95%—fills, basic gear fixes, customer service, shop systems, and all the unglamorous stuff. Third, attitude is everything: show up prepared, check your ego at the door, take responsibility for your own learning, and make yourself useful—while also making sure you’re not being used as slave labor. To help, I also share a practical checklist of real-world DM skills you should have (that agencies often don’t require), and I’ve made it available as a free download on my website.
