In this video, I prove that assumption is outdated by live streaming at about a quarter mile from my apartment using Wi‑Fi HaLow (802.11ah) at 900 MHz. I put this “not your old blue box Linksys” tech under a real-world microscope with three tests that actually matter: range, bandwidth, and penetration—because if it can’t survive concrete, stairs, and distance, it’s just marketing. I break down the hardware stack I used: two Seed Studio HaLow boards (one as a gateway, one as a roaming client), a Raspberry Pi 4 running a Morse Micro OpenWRT fork, and proper 900 MHz antennas (don’t handicap yourself with the stubby ones). Then I get into the practical stuff—how HaLow differs from 2.4/5 GHz Wi‑Fi and why it sits in a sweet spot compared to LoRa: you get real IP networking and enough bandwidth for tasks like browsing and even video, while keeping low power draw for solar and battery builds.
