Wi‑Fi antennas like the little rubber duck are fine if you never leave your house. The second you step into the real world—Meshtastic builds, OpenMANET “military‑style” IP mesh radios, or even weird zero‑trust stacks like Reticulum—antennas stop being accessories and start being the system. In this video I take a full lineup of 915 MHz antennas and test them in real conditions using Wi‑Fi HaLow (802.11ah) on a portable, open-source Haven-style mesh node, because HaLow is the first time sub‑GHz feels like “real internet”: megabit-class throughput with full IP networking. I ran two tests per antenna: one in my neighborhood (brick house, lots of obstructions) and one out in open farmland for near line‑of‑sight. I logged GPS, RSSI, and SNR every few seconds into CSV so we can actually map performance instead of guessing. The big takeaway surprised me: distance was the dominant factor more often than not—even with trees, houses, and dense materials in the way. Directional antennas did help in places, but they weren’t as dramatically “directional” as I expected, and the bulky Yagi didn’t justify its size for my use. The standout for me was the “yogurt cup” sub‑GHz tactical antenna: it consistently looked stronger, gave me more “extremely strong” readings up close, and pushed farther in the rural run—roughly ~1.8 miles on a 2.5‑mile scale. And then I zoom out to what’s next: smarter antennas (circular polarization, diversity, and eventually MIMO in the spec) that can leverage multipath instead of getting wrecked by it.
