This build breaks just about every rule the hardware industry has lived by for the last 30 years—and I couldn’t be happier about it. In this video I tear down and field-test Haven: an open-source, portable Wi‑Fi HaLow mesh router built around a Raspberry Pi 4 that can link nodes over kilometers on sub‑GHz spectrum. The wild part is it’s not “LoRa messaging” or some proprietary walled garden—this is full IP networking, so your normal apps can work, and it runs open mesh standards (802.11s + BATMAN) for self-healing, peer-to-peer routing you actually own. I walk through the anatomy of the build (Pi 4, mini PCIe hat + Morse Micro HaLow radio, USB 2.4 GHz dongle, and a dual‑21700 battery setup that got me around 7–8 hours). I also talk legality and power/EIRP basics, antenna choices around ~915 MHz, and why higher TX power helps range and stability but doesn’t magically increase 802.11ah bandwidth. Then I show the “this shouldn’t work but it does” moment: off-grid FaceTime over the mesh with no cellular and no internet.
