This gorgeous little device might look innocent, but it’s actually a node in a parallel comms network—one most people don’t even know exists. In this video I do a hands-on test of the SenseCAP Indicator D1L, a standalone Meshtastic communicator that lets you send encrypted text messages over LoRa with no cell towers, no SIM cards, no phone, and no monthly fees. It’s basically CB radio, but with text (and privacy), and it’s engineered to prioritize freedom over profit—which, honestly, feels refreshing in a world where my toothbrush wants a subscription. I filmed this in Brickell, Miami and put it through a real-world gauntlet: a concrete “penetration test” in my high-rise stairwell, an urban test through dense buildings, and a range test out toward Key Biscayne. My takeaway: the “LoRa can’t handle concrete” narrative doesn’t match what I see in practice—I was still getting messages after about 10 floors of concrete, and I was pulling messages through multiple buildings. For the longer range run, using a quick-and-dirty setup on the default LongFast preset, I found the practical limit in my conditions was about 4 miles—inside a car that’s basically a Faraday cage. With better antennas, placement, and different LoRa presets, there’s still a lot more range to unlock.
