This video is me showing off a tracking setup that’s basically the opposite of the AirTag world: no Tim Cook, no big tech, no monthly cellular subscription, and no relying on nearby strangers’ iPhones. I’m testing the Houdini M1—my holster design for the Seeed Studio SenseCAP T1000E (a.k.a. the T1E)—to see if an open-source, decentralized Meshtastic tracker can actually deliver real peace of mind for pet owners, especially off-grid. The whole point is simple: GPS coordinates are easy; the “last mile” is getting those coordinates back to you without paying a gatekeeper. I also get personal about why I care: I’ve lived the panic of losing a dog in the wilderness. So I break down the tracking ecosystem—AirTags (Bluetooth + Apple’s iPhone network), Tile-style competitors, cheap Temu/AliExpress trackers, Garmin inReach, and the overpriced dog-collar GPS market—and explain where each one fails. Then I show why Meshtastic + LoRa is the move: peer-to-peer range that can hit a few miles, plus the ability to extend coverage with extra nodes or piggyback on existing local meshes. For homesteads, overlanding, national parks, and any off-grid scenario, this is the subscriptionless tracking stack I actually trust.
