Cloud storage providers have been selling you a lie. If “the cloud” was really the answer, our devices wouldn’t keep shipping with bigger and bigger local drives every year. In this video I show you how I built my own private cloud/NAS that replaced my Dropbox-style workflow, killed the monthly subscription fees, and gave me way more control over my data. I also talk about the real-world pain of living off external SSDs—hubs, worn-out ports, and the fact that a 2TB Samsung T7 cost me $170. For the build, I used the IceWhale ZimaCube Pro, because it’s the only NAS I’ve personally come across that supports Thunderbolt 4—so it can act like a NAS on the network and a DAS when I want direct speed. I installed a Seagate BarraCuda 2TB HDD and a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe in the 7th bay, enabled SSH, spun up shares, and set up remote access through a simple VPN on my Ubiquiti router so I could reach everything while traveling.
