About This Video

In this livestream I hang out with you guys and dig through the latest SelfH.st weekly newsletter to see what’s actually worth adding to a homelab. We talk about the usual reality of self-hosting: sometimes there are genuinely interesting new apps, and sometimes it’s just another “note taking or secret sharing” tool that doesn’t move the needle. I also touch on the Plex breach and why, if you’re running Plex, you probably already got that “update your password” email—unfortunate, but it’s part of the world we live in. We also get into real homelab talk: Discord community management (and why most people join servers but don’t have the time to engage), plus hardware and storage decisions that actually impact your day-to-day. I share what I’m running (Proxmox, ZFS pools, and an Intel Arc A310 for transcoding), why I’m thinking about downsizing for power efficiency, and the constant tradeoff between “this is cool” and “this is going to wreck my power bill.” Along the way we chat drive deals, warranties, bad sector concerns, and why I’m still not interested in running my own mail server long-term—mail is a nightmare and it’s a huge attack surface.
