Keeping track of what hardware and services you're running in your home lab has always been a pain — until now. In this video, I take a look at RackPeek, a lightweight CLI tool and web UI that lets you document and manage your home lab and small-scale IT infrastructure in one place. I'll walk you through the GitHub repository, show you my own live instance running on my home server, and then do a clean Docker Compose installation from scratch so you can see just how quick and easy it really is. ⚠️ Note: RackPeek is still in very early development (v0.0.11 at time of recording). Things will change, so keep an eye on the GitHub for any breaking changes! Also worth noting — there is currently no authentication built in, so don't expose this publicly without putting an auth layer in front of it. 🔗 Links: ► RackPeek Docker Hub: https://hub.docker.com/r/aptacode/rackpeek/tags ► RackPeek GitHub: https://github.com/Timmoth/RackPeek ► Related Article: https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2026/02/im-documenting-my-entire-home-lab-as-code-with-rackpeek/ If you'd like early access to my videos and an ad-free experience, consider becoming a channel member or patron — links in the description! #homelab #selfhosted #docker ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 - Introduction & the documentation problem 01:40 - GitHub repository overview 02:30 - CLI vs Docker install options 03:30 - Docker Compose setup explained 05:25 - Live demo of my RackPeek instance 06:02 - Navigating the web UI (hardware, systems, services) 07:10 - Hardware section walkthrough 14:07 - Fresh Docker Compose install walkthrough 15:57 - Deploying with Docker Compose up 16:09 - Final result & authentication warning 16:47 - Wrap up & recommendations /=========================================/ ✅ Amazon Wishlist: https://dbte.ch/amznwishlist Get early, ad-free access to new content by becoming a channel member, or a Patron! ✅ https://www.patreon.com/dbtech ✅ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVy16RS5eEDh8anP8j94G2A/join All My Social Links: ✅ https://dbt3.ch/@dbtech Join Discord! ✅ https://discord.gg/M9J6hFq /=========================================/ ✨Ways to support DB Tech: ✅ https://www.patreon.com/dbtech ✅ https://www.paypal.me/DBTechReviews ✅ https://ko-fi.com/dbtech ✅ Cashapp: https://cash.app/$dbtechyt ✅ Venmo: https://venmo.com/dbtechyt ✨Come chat in Discord: ✅ https://dbte.ch/discord

About This Video

One of the things I’ve struggled with since I got into self-hosting is documentation—just keeping track of what services I’m running, what hardware I’ve got, and what the specs even are. In this video I take a look at RackPeek, which is a lightweight, opinionated CLI tool and web UI that helps you document and manage your homelab (or small-scale IT infrastructure) without the usual hassle of trying to cram everything into a notes app. I walk through the GitHub repo real quick, show you what the CLI version looks like, and then focus on what I use on this channel: Docker. I demo my own live RackPeek instance so you can see how it organizes hardware, systems (bare metal/VMs + OS), and services (IP/port/protocol/URL), plus newer stuff like tags, notes, and docs. Then I do a clean Docker Compose install from scratch so you can see how fast it is to get running. Just keep in mind it’s still super early development (v0.0.11 when I recorded), so expect changes—and there’s no authentication yet, so don’t expose it publicly without putting an auth layer in front of it.
