I recently made a video showing how I'm using Android tablets in different rooms in my house to control different things. The comments section of that video had a few people asking about my automations, so I thought we could dig through them on a livestream and see what's right, what's wrong, and what's missing. 📽️ Tablet Control Video: https://youtu.be/iA0u9uCIXyE 🔗 Join the Conversation: Subscribe and hit the bell icon so you don’t miss out on future streams like this! #HomeAutomation #HomeAssistant #Homelab #LiveChat #OpenSource #TechCommunity ✨Ways to support DB Tech: ✅ https://www.patreon.com/dbtech ✅ https://www.paypal.me/DBTechReviews ✅ https://discord.gg/M9J6hFq 🔗 RackNerd Sale Affiliate Links https://dbte.ch/racknerd 1 vCPU core, 1gb RAM, 20GB SSD, 1500GB transfer https://dbte.ch/racknerd1gbkvm 2 vCPU core, 2.5gb RAM, 40GB SSD, 3000GB transfer https://dbte.ch/racknerd2gbkvm 2 vCPU core, 3gb RAM, 60GB SSD, 5500GB transfer https://dbte.ch/racknerd3gbkvm 3 vCPU core, 4.5gb RAM, 100GB SSD, 8500GB transfer https://dbte.ch/racknerd4gbkvm 4 vCPU core, 5gb RAM, 130GB SSD, 12000GB transfer https://dbte.ch/racknerd5gbkvm

About This Video

In this livestream I dig into my Home Assistant automations and talk through what I think I’m doing right, what’s kind of a mess, and what’s still missing. This all spun out of my Android tablet control video—people wanted to know how I’m actually automating stuff behind the dashboards, especially the TV/Plex flow I use for my son. I’ll show you the real-world reasoning behind my choices, because in a house that’s actually lived in, “perfect” automations don’t matter nearly as much as reliable ones. A big example is how I had my son’s TV automated with an Aqara FP2 presence sensor: walk into the room, TV turns on, Plex opens, and it resumes what he was watching; leave for 5 minutes, TV turns off. That worked… until it didn’t. Once we got him a safety bed with a canopy, the sensor couldn’t reliably see him, so the whole thing fell apart. So I pivoted: I converted those automations into simple scripts and trigger them from the tablet buttons instead. I also show the YAML and explain the dependencies (Roku + Plex integrations), the delays I had to bake in, and why I use AI tools like Claude to help me build and troubleshoot YAML without blindly trusting it.
