This video isn’t a step-by-step tutorial—it’s an update on my smart home journey and the biggest problem I finally got tired of: internet dependence. I love what Home Assistant gives me in terms of control and privacy, but a lot of my early smart home stuff was Tuya-based. Even with Tuya Local helping on some devices, if my internet hiccuped or the Tuya cloud decided to take a lunch break, lights just wouldn’t turn on. That single point of failure drove me absolutely nuts. So I made the jump that I’d been avoiding: I plugged a Zigbee/Z-Wave USB dongle into my Home Assistant box and started replacing bulbs and plugs with Zigbee devices—mostly ThirdReality. The mesh network has been the game-changer: powered devices extend the network, battery sensors last forever, and the response time is basically instant. But then I ran into the next issue: convenience. To get the family on board, I set up cheap Android tablets as always-on dashboards in key rooms, locked down with Fully Kiosk, motion-activated, and even battery-managed with smart plugs. The best part is the kids room dashboard—one button gives my son real independence by turning on the TV and resuming his show automatically. That moment made the whole project worth it.
