About This Video

In this livestream I took Cloudreve for a spin as a self-hosted “Google Drive-ish” file management and sharing system. I’m going to be upfront: I’ve only been running it for a few days, and I do have some concerns because it’s from a Chinese company. I haven’t dug deep into network traffic logs yet to see if anything is phoning home, so take that with a grain of salt. That said, the UI is slick, it’s super easy to deploy with Docker, and it’s one of the first tools in a while that made me go, “Okay… this actually feels nice to use.” We walk through the day-to-day stuff you actually care about in a homelab: uploading files and folders, previews for photos and videos, built-in media playback, and sharing links with options like passwords and expiration. I also show some of the “extra” functionality like editing documents (via an online office integration) and even photo editing through a built-in Photopea option. We also talk about WebDAV, because that’s likely the path if you want to hook Cloudreve into other clients—especially if you’re trying to make phone workflows work. Finally, I cover licensing honestly: the free version is what most of us will use, but there is a Pro tier with business/monetization features. They provided me a Pro license after I requested it as a content creator, so you’ll see what’s different and why most homelab folks probably won’t need the paid bits.
