Is Canonical MicroCloud the right private cloud solution for your homelab? I spent several weeks testing this open-source, scalable cloud platform from Canonical to see how it stacks up against hypervisors like Proxmox. It brings the cloud experience right to your own servers or mini PCs! In this honest review (sponsored by Canonical ), I break down the incredibly simple installation and clustering process and share my thoughts on the default networking (OVN) , the GUI vs. CLI experience , and what features homelab users will love—or find frustrating. 🚀 Timecodes (Jump to the Good Stuff!) 0:00 Introduction & Sponsorship Transparency 1:16 What is MicroCloud? About This Video

In this video I’m not doing a tutorial—I’m walking you through my real homelab experience testing Canonical MicroCloud over several weeks. For full transparency, this one is sponsored by Canonical, but they specifically asked for my honest opinions, including what I do and don’t like. I’m coming into MicroCloud as someone who’s mostly lived in Proxmox, so if you’re new to MicroCloud too, you’re not alone. I cover what MicroCloud is (an open-source platform for VMs and LXCs), who it feels built for, and why it’s more “private cloud on your own hardware” than a typical single-host hypervisor setup. What surprised me most was how ridiculously simple it was to install and form a cluster—Ubuntu Server plus a few shell commands and you’re off to the races. I talk about deploying VMs/LXCs from the built-in image library, the quirks I hit with custom ISOs, and a couple UI/UX frustrations (like error messages flying by). I also break down the reality of high availability: MicroCloud gives you HA storage with Ceph out of the box, but instance failover isn’t a default “just works” feature. Finally, we dig into networking (OVN vs home DHCP), performance, my homelab wishlist, and why I’m not replacing my Proxmox setup just yet.
