In this video we take a comprehensive look at Alexandrie, a self-hosted note-taking application that runs on Docker! 🐳📝 We walk through the interface, explore key features like markdown editing, workspace organization, categories, and document sharing, then dive into the Docker installation process using docker-compose. Alexandrie offers a clean interface with both light and dark modes 🌓, real-time markdown preview ⚡, keyboard shortcuts ⌨️, custom snippets, and multi-user collaboration capabilities. The app uses a MySQL database backend with MinIO-compatible object storage for file uploads. While the application shows great promise with active development and regular updates 🚀, I encountered some challenges during setup including domain configuration issues and search functionality limitations that only searches document titles rather than full-text content. We also discuss areas where the deployment process could be improved, such as implementing environment variables for easier configuration. Whether you're looking for a self-hosted alternative to commercial note-taking apps or just exploring Docker-based applications, this review gives you an honest look at what Alexandrie offers and where it could improve. 💪 ⭐ If you find this project interesting, head over to the GitHub repo and give it a star! It's currently sitting at 746 stars and could use your support! About This Video

In this video I take a hands-on look at a self-hosted note-taking app called Alexandrie (pretty sure I’m pronouncing it the American way—developer’s French, so apologies if I’m butchering it). I walk through the UI, the workspace and category setup, folders, the markdown editor, and the real-time preview. I also show off some of the little quality-of-life stuff I actually like—drag-and-drop organization, Control+S to save, a dark mode that isn’t “midnight black,” and a really solid built-in markdown cheat sheet for folks who aren’t markdown wizards yet. Then I get into the stuff that needs work. Search is the big one: in my testing it only searches document titles, not the text inside your notes, and tags aren’t clickable (so you can’t just click a tag to browse similar content). Backups also appear to export a JSON of your markdown content, but not the uploaded files/images from the CDN/object storage side. After that, I jump into the Docker setup with docker-compose and break down the stack (MySQL + RustFS/MinIO-style storage + backend + frontend). It deploys easily for local/IP access, but I spent a good chunk of time trying—and failing—to get it working cleanly on a domain, and I’d really like to see more moved into environment variables to make that whole process less painful.
