In this video I show you how I combine Synty Sidekicks with Unreal Engine’s Game Animation Sample template, so you can run around with a Synty character using all the nice movement and traversal that comes with that project. I start by pulling the Sidekicks content out of Unity and into UE5 the way I like to do it: textures first, then the base SK model, then the modular human pieces. I also fix the “blurry” look by changing the texture filter to Nearest so everything gets that crispy clear Synty style, and I clean up the imported materials by deleting the junk and replacing references with a single material that actually looks right. After that, retargeting is honestly a breeze. I duplicate the Game Animation Sample character blueprint, swap the skeletal mesh to the Synty base model, then generate an auto retargeter by retargeting from the sandbox character to my base model. I add my new RTG_Cinti entry into the ABP Generic Retargeter map, set the component tag on my character to match, and then set the default pawn so I can hit Play and test it immediately. Finally, I show how to add armor (Fantasy Knights in my case) by attaching extra skeletal mesh components under the main mesh, using the same ABP Generic Retargeter and the same component tag so the armor animates perfectly with the character.
