First things first, your prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland that makes up part of the male reproductive system. It's located just below your bladder and surrounds your urethra, which is the tube that carries urine and semen out of your body. The main function of your prostate is to produce and secrete a fluid that makes up a significant portion of semen. This fluid nourishes and protects sperm, helping them survive and function effectively. It also plays a role in controlling your flow of urine by squeezing your urethra shut during ejaculation, which prevents urine from mixing with semen. Despite its small size, your prostate plays an important role in your reproductive and urinary health. What are 5 key signs of prostate problems? There are several signs you might be having issues with your prostate. Prostate problems often lead to urinary symptoms. Watch out for things like frequent urination, getting up more at night, a weak urine flow, difficulty starting urination, or a feeling that your bladder isn't completely empty after urinating. Some prostate issues can cause pain or discomfort. This may present as pain or a burning sensation during urination, pain in your lower back, or pain during ejaculation. If you notice blood in your urine or semen, it's a sign that something might be going on with your prostate. While this can be alarming, it's essential to consult your doctor for a proper evaluation to understand why it’s happening. Prostate problems can also affect your sexual health. You might experience erectile dysfunction, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or problems with ejaculation. Remember, experiencing one or more of these signs doesn't automatically mean you have a prostate problem. What are the most common prostate problems? There are many prostate problems you might be struggling with, but some of the most common include benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is when your prostate gland grows larger over time, pressing against your urethra and causing urinary problems. It's common as men age and can lead to symptoms like frequent urination, weak urine flow, or difficulty starting and stopping urination. Prostatitis is another common problem that occurs when your prostate gland becomes inflamed. It can be due to infection and can lead to pain in your pelvic area, as well as urinary and sexual symptoms. Prostate Cancer is also common… did you know that 90% of men with prostate cancer will not experience any symptoms? Regular blood checks with your doctor can detect prostate cancer early. Although it is common, early prostate cancer is very treatable and curable. Regular check-ups and open communication with your doctor can help manage and prevent prostate problems. If you have prostate problems and would like help, you can book an appointment with a urologist to begin your treatment journey.
