The most common causes include repetitive strain injury, sprains or strains, a fracture, a dislocation, arthritis (such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, or ganglion cysts. If you are affected by chronic wrist and or hand pain that won’t go away, despite over-the-counter medication or doing physiotherapy exercises, it is advised to seek medical assistance. Your doctor can help determine what may be troubling your hands. *What does arthritis feel like in the hands?* Everyone experiences pain differently. When and how you experience symptoms depend on which type of hand arthritis you have. Hand arthritis pain can feel like a constant, dull ache in your joints. Some people also say they experience sudden, sharp or stabbing pain in the hand(s). *How can I relieve wrist or hand pain at night?* Ways to help relieve wrist and hand pain if you are trying to sleep more easily include wearing a splint to bed, using ice or heat packs on the affected area, elevating your hand to reduce swelling, over-the-counter pain medication, and physio hand exercises before bed. It’s also advisable to avoid sleeping on your hands, as that can increase the pain. *ABOUT THE PHYSIOTHERAPIST* Pam McElhone is a deputy clinical services manager for physiotherapy at Ross Hall Clinic Braehead in Glasgow, part of Circle Health Group.
