The reality is that directly following your hip replacement, pain can be very uncomfortable, but it will be different from the chronic joint pain you were experiencing before surgery. It’s important to know the pain is expected and not harmful; don’t let it stop you mobilising otherwise your recovery will be slower. You will have painkillers prescribed to make you comfortable so please don’t worry! EXERCISES LAYING DOWN Exercise 1 – Ankle Circles Ankle circles to help with circulation and swelling Exercise 2 – Buttock Clenches Buttock clenches to activate your muscles, hold for 3 seconds Exercise 3 – Heel Ups Lying on your back, sliding your heel up the bed towards your bottom to bend your hip. Exercise 4 – Heel Out To The Side Sliding your heel out to the side away from your body STANDING EXERCISES Exercise 5 – Knee raises Whilst standing, raise your knee up to a 90 degree angle. Exercise 6 – Hip abduction Whilst holding on to something, move your leg straight out to the side. Exercise 7 – Hip extension Whilst holding on to something, move your leg straight out behind you.
