More often than not, by catching knee pain early and learning which exercises you can do help to ease and manage your symptoms you will begin to get a better understanding of your pain or developments with your osteoarthritis of how best to manage arthritis. I’m going to explain why you should embrace movement and exercise as well as giving you 5 effective exercises that ease knee pain specifically related to arthritis. So let’s get into it. You might be avoiding exercise because of the arthritic pain in your knees, but actually exercises that will strengthen your knee and keep it mobile will actually reduce your knee pain if you stick with it. The lack of movement in your knees might weaken your muscles so finding the best way to strengthen them, probably from the comfort of your home, is a really good idea. With arthritis, you really want to make sure your knees don’t become stiff from the lack of movement – this will only make it harder for you in the long run so it’s best to put the effort in early. It’s likely that if you've got knee pain, there may be an issue with alignment in your knees. Some of your muscles might be weak and some of them strong. By doing exercises, you'll restore the natural balance of these muscles helping the knee to work as it's supposed to. As we/I mentioned, it may seem counterintuitive because you've got discomfort, but in time exercises which strengthen and mobilise your knees which should – with a good amount of effort and dedication - make you feel more comfortable. This will also preserve the life of your arthritic knee joint and hopefully delay the need for medical treatment. These are a few of the exercises I often suggest to people I see with mild, early stage arthritis – you don’t need a gym, you can do these movements safely at home! These exercises should take a fair few weeks for you to feel the benefits, so stick with them. If they increase the pain you’re feeling in your knees, then ease off and do these movements more gently. If you feel sharp pain then do contact your physio or your consultant. You most definitely want to avoid long periods of exercise and high-impact sports with arthritis. Well, it depends on whether the pain is progressively getting worse. Gentle exercise can be enough to see a big difference. But if the pain in your knees begins to worsen, if it's affecting your sleep or if you’re using increasing amounts of painkillers that aren't working I'd advise you see someone. Eventually if the pain in your knees begins to worsen you could consider treatments - such as steroid injections that have an added lubricant to reduce the friction in your joints. You may eventually consider knee replacement surgery. Your physio will be able to advise you and point you in the right direction for the best support whatever you decide to do. It’s a very good idea to see a specialist consultant if your knee pain changes dramatically.
