I headed out for a quick solo winter camp in the desert mountains of southern Idaho with about half an hour of daylight left—classic me not leaving as early as I wanted. This year has been abnormally warm and dry, so I wanted to take advantage and get some miles in. I found a sweet little campsite tucked into a drainage basin with these wild rock formations that make zero sense in the best way. The sunset was pretty underwhelming thanks to an inversion pushing smoke down, but the morning made up for it—frosty start, a killer sunrise, and that classic desert temperature swing where you’re bundled up at dawn and getting cooked by afternoon. The bigger goal was to see what a long dirt bike day feels like, because I’m seriously considering racing this year—some kind of enduro vibe, not sure if desert or mountain is my lane yet. I tried to stack miles (100 was the dream), met up with buddies, and we got into some rough, rocky, technical terrain. I dumped the bike a handful of times and my bike started acting up—twice it wouldn’t go above idle, which made me think something might be going on in the carb/fueling. I still managed to limp it back and logged about 45 miles total, which is way short of 100 but still my biggest dirt bike day so far. Good reminder: big goals are cool, but getting out there and learning is the whole point.
