About This Video

When a senior Cavalier suddenly starts marking in the house, I don’t want you to assume it’s “bad behavior.” In this video I walk you through the age-related reasons I see most often—things like cognitive decline, a UTI, or another infection. If marking is new and your dog is in their senior years, my first step is always the same: get to the vet for a good physical and blood work. I also recommend senior dogs see the veterinarian at least twice a year, because if there’s a medical issue behind the marking, it may stop once you address it. If we’ve ruled out (or treated) medical causes and your Cavalier is still having accidents due to a declining mind, I share how a belly band can be a helpful management tool. I also explain the non-negotiables: replace it right away if they urinate, wash it regularly, and keep the belly area clean with a natural shampoo so you don’t end up with a secondary infection. I also cover why punishment can make marking worse (especially with anxiety), how enzyme cleaners help remove the urine smell, blocking repeat “hot spots,” and why I like to amp up potty breaks with leashed walks so you can reward the right choices. With patience, consistency, and the right support, you can get back to a cleaner home and a happier senior Cavalier.
