I walk you through how I condition comfort first—touching legs, picking up feet, moving the furry “slippers,” and pairing each step with a simple “yes” marker and a treat. I also explain a big mistake I see: grabbing and holding tight. With Cavaliers, the second you force it, they learn to panic, so I build trust by letting my dog feel like they have a choice to move away. For grinders, I start with the sound from a distance—on/off/treat—then slowly increase duration and closeness only while my Cavalier stays relaxed.
