About This Video

If your Cavalier runs the second you grab the nail trimmers or the grinder, I want you to hear this: it’s usually not about finding a “better” tool—it’s about setting a better foundation. In week one of my Cavalier Grooming Essentials series, I’m not focused on the actual cut yet. I’m focused on teaching your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that paw handling, clippers, and the Dremel are safe, predictable, and (most importantly) lead to good things. I walk you through how I condition comfort first—touching legs, picking up feet, moving the furry “slippers,” and pairing each step with a simple “yes” marker and a treat. I also explain a big mistake I see: grabbing and holding tight. With Cavaliers, the second you force it, they learn to panic, so I build trust by letting my dog feel like they have a choice to move away. For grinders, I start with the sound from a distance—on/off/treat—then slowly increase duration and closeness only while my Cavalier stays relaxed. Stuart gets nails done every two weeks, so I’m always thinking long-term: 15 years of calm, happy nail care.
